Arsenal Football Club’s dream of a £100m stadium in Highbury, north London, took a step closer to reality after Islington council approved the club’s development brief for the Ashburton Grove site.
Last night, the council endorsed the football club’s plans for a 60,000-seat stadium and commercial development on the 10.12ha (25 acre) industrial site. At the same meeting, the council also approved a development brief to turn the existing Highbury stadium into a mixed-use scheme. Attached conditions include an 80:20 public/private transport agreement.
Ashburton Grove, N7, is currently home to a council waste depot and a number of private businesses. Arsenal pledged to relocate all the businesses on the site and is in talks with Railtrack and Sainsbury to acquire a 4.8ha (12 acre) site on Lough Road, N7, to house them.
The club will now submit a planning application for the stadium in October.
Anthony Green & Spencer introduced the site to Arsenal last November and is acting as development adviser and letting agent to the football club.
