Manchester Council has chosen the Greater Manchester Pension Fund to deliver the next phase of affordable homes in the city. The partnership is subject to approval on Wednesday.
The move forms part of plans to build 1,583 additional homes through This City, the council’s housing company. The first project, known as No.1 Ancoats Green, is nearing completion, with 129 low carbon homes, of which 30% are affordable,. The project is situated next to the green space and Ancoats Green park.
A further 126 homes will be delivered at Postal Street in the Northern Quarter, Piccadilly. The council plans to lodge the proposals for the scheme in the coming weeks.
The remaining pipeline consists of 1,457 homes which will be delivered on council-owned brownfield sites across Manchester, of which at least 20% are expected to be affordable.
Bev Craig, leader of the Manchester City Council, said: “This City is about accelerating home building on council-owned land so that we can build the homes that Manchester needs on our own terms. These homes will contribute to our housing strategy target to deliver at least 36,000 new homes up to 2032 – and at least 10,000 of these homes will be social, council or genuinely affordable.”
Eleanor Wills, chair of the fund, said: “We are acutely aware of the severe housing crisis both nationally and in the North-West region. This is why we are proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Manchester City Council investing in the This City vehicle that supports the government’s plan to provide much-needed affordable homes for families while ensuring returns to secure the pensions of our members.”
