Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has agreed a leasing deal with cinema and leisure operator The Light, which will become the anchor tenant at its flagship Rise development in Redhill, Surrey.
The Light will open a 35,000 sq ft cinema, bowling and entertainment venue in the town centre at Easter 2023.
The operator has committed to a long lease for a six-screen premium cinema, a nine-lane boutique bowling alley and retro arcade, a diner and bar, and a range of other leisure premises.
The Light had previously signed on for a 30-year lease at the scheme in 2017 with proposals for a seven-screen cinema, but it is understood that the project was subsequently shelved amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Separately, the council has also agreed a deal with Tesco for a new 3,500 sq ft Tesco Express store at the scheme.
The two deals mean that half of the commercial floor space is now let. GCW has been appointed on leasing the remaining seven units.
Council leader Mark Brunt said: “Securing The Light for our development provides a huge boost to our scheme and to realising the long-term economic future of Redhill town centre.
“When complete, the Rise will be a vibrant new leisure and entertainment venue for the town that will attract people from all over our borough and from further afield to come and have a great time.
“The Rise will help boost our local economy by creating job opportunities and increasing footfall and spend in Redhill. It is a cornerstone in our council’s ongoing investment and commitment to help revitalise the town.”
Redhill will be The Light’s 12th cinema and leisure venue in the UK.
