Wigan Council seeks development partner for £125m Galleries revamp

Wigan Council has begun the search for a development partner for the £125m regeneration of the Galleries shopping centre.

The council, which bought the 440,000 sq ft centre in March last year, aims to repurpose surplus retail space for uses that can “catalyse further development” in the town, with scope to encourage its night-time economy.

Options for redevelopment include more residential aspects, as well as more hotels, food and beverage, leisure offers such as a cinema or bowling alley, markets or independent retail, education spaces, health uses and flexible workspaces.

The council also aims to provide new facilities for the site’s indoor market, with the intention of relocating it to the former Marketgate building.

It aims to select its preferred partner in 2020, with development agreements likely to be finalised in 2021.
