Councils to take control of NI housing

Peter Hain, Northern Ireland Secretary, has proposed transferring some of the functions of the Housing Executive to local government.

He announced a cull of “needless bureaucracy” and said the number of public bodies in the province would be reduced from 154 to 75.

The cull forms part of a plan to reduce the number of local councils from 26 to seven.
