Covenants could protect land from development

A new law could protect land from development by imposing rules on its use after it has been sold or inherited by family members.

A conservation covenant would ensure that the new owners of the land would have to comply with requirements to maintain woodland or preserve public access, for example.

Andrew Sells, the chairman of Natural England which advises the government on protecting wildlife, said the covenants could make “a real, immediate difference.”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will respond to the Law Commission’s recommendations later in the year.
