CPRE: ‘Guidance is being flouted’

Local and national government failure to halt greenfield development is causing environmental damage.

According to the Council for the Protection of Rural England’s Sprawl Patrol report: “Too many developments get the go-ahead on greenfield sites and in places which are difficult to reach without a car.”

CPRE head of transport Lilli Matson said that despite the government policy of discouraging car use, developers are pursuing “damaging schemes” all over the UK.

The CPRE has called for: a third-party right of appeal against consents granted in breach of planning policy; a revamped PPG 13 extending the sequential test to promote development in areas with green access; and detailed parking strategies to be included in regional planning guidance.
