Crane threatens to topple at LandSec Midtown scheme

Work on a Land Securities scheme in London’s Midtown has stopped and a neighbouring building evacuated following fears that a crane on the site could collapse.

The streets surrounding the 700,000 sq ft New Street Square scheme on New Fetter Lane, EC4, have been cordoned off.

Accountant Deloitte’s Hill House at 1 Little New Street, which LandSec also owns, has been evacuated.

The crane is one of six on the site of the 250,000 sq ft first phase, which has been let to Deloitte for its new UK headquarters.

Plans for the scheme include two further office buildings and 30,000 sq ft of retail.

Police are present at the site and temporary accommodation is being sought for the staff evacuated from Hill House.
