Crossrail Bill and Housing Act to become law tonight

Two key pieces of legislation for the property industry are expected to become law this evening.

The Crossrail Bill and the Housing and Regeneration Act are due to receive royal assent at 7pm.

The long-awaited Crossrail Bill will allow the creation of a £16bn rail line linking Heathrow Airport to Canary Wharf.

It won the support of the House of Lords this afternoon and is expected to be ratified by the Commons.

The Housing and Regeneration Act paves the way for the creation of the Homes and Communities Agency, which will lead efforts to meet government’s target to build 3m new homes by 2020.

It will be formed from English Partnerships, the Housing Corporation, and the delivery functions of the department for Communities and Local Government.

It will officially come into being on 1 December, headed by Sir Bob Kerslake.
