Crossrail delayed further until H1 2022

Crossrail is now not expected to fully open until the first half of 2022, according to Transport for London.

The opening of the long-awaited train line had been expected next summer, before Crossrail advised in July that it would miss this deadline. The delay is on the central section between Paddington and Abbey Wood.

However, TfL warned that Crossrail opening during the first half of 2022 was not definite, and the plans needed to be reviewed by itself and the Department of Transport.

Costs on the project are also set to soar by a further £1.1bn. The project’s initial budget was around £14.8bn. It will now cost closer to £20bn. DfT and TfL are in discussions as to how the additional costs will be funded.
