Crossrail given Royal seal of approval

Crossrail secured Royal Assent yesterday with an operating link on the £15.9bn project between Heathrow and Canary Wharf expected to be completed by 2018.

Work will begin in spring or summer next year to clear the way for construction to start in 2010. Crossrail will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Transport for London from today.

It is being financed by a £5.1bn grant from the Department for Transport, £8.2m from the City of London and £500m from the City of London and BAA, the airports operator.

The remaining sum will come from a variety of sources, including the London Planning charge.
