Crown Estate makes Cheshire acquisition

The Crown Estate, the Queen’s property company, has bought the historic Tabley Estate in Knutsford, Cheshire, from the University of Manchester for an undisclosed sum.

The 3,608-acre property is an agricultural, residential and sporting estate in north-east Cheshire.

It includes 18 equipped farms, a further 18 lettings of farmland, three sites let as grazing land, 52 residential properties, 13 commercial leases, and the Cheshire Showground.

Tabley House, a listed mansion with a further 26 acres of listed parkland, will remain in the ownership of the university.

Christopher Bourchier, director of rural estates at The Crown Estate, said: “The Tabley Estate represents a unique opportunity to add to our rural estate holdings and the acquisition underlines The Crown Estate’s commitment to remain a major rural land owner.

“We are committed to working closely with existing tenants and the local community to secure a strong and vibrant future for the Estate.”

Smiths Gore and Eversheds advised The University of Manchester; Carter Jonas and Burgess Salmon advised The Crown Estate.
