Cumbria’s Local Enterprise Partnership has submitted a bid to host one of the government’s proposed Enterprise Zones in the county.
The expression of interest, entitled Fuelling the Future, outlines plans for a low carbon/energy Enterprise Zone along Britain’s “energy coast” and would take in two sites – Barrow Waterfront in Furness and Lillyhall in West Cumbria.
The Lillyhall site will be targeted at nuclear and low carbon-related technologies and Barrow Waterfront will be aimed at offshore renewable energy generation and gas storage,
Cumbria LEP’s interim chairman, George Beveridge, said: “LEP partners have been working hard in the short timescale given to evaluate the options for Cumbria and produce this expression of interest.
“We believe a low carbon/energy Enterprise Zone presents an unparalleled opportunity for the growth of the economy of Cumbria as a whole and for Cumbria to contribute significantly to national economic growth.”
