Curlew Capital gets planning approval on Stratford student scheme

Construction is set to begin later this year on a £60m student housing complex in Stratford, E15, after planners gave the new 282-bed scheme the green light.

Property investor Curlew Capital will demolish Poland House, the existing 100-bed building which it bought two years ago, and replace it with accommodation offering nearly three times as much capacity to house students.

Developers hope the site on Stratford High Street will be rated BREEAM Outstanding, and say they will build in 650 sq ft of community space for use by local charities, programmes and start-ups. The architect is Henley Halebrown.

It brings Curlew’s future student housing footprint in London to 467 beds, after it also committed £60m to funding a 185-room development in Bermondsey in September. Across the UK, it is bringing forward six schemes totalling around 1,600 beds.

Jim Sutherland, Curlew’s head of development, said: “Stratford has undergone a significant transformation and we look forward to delivering a high-quality asset that meets the demands of modern students, including impressive ESG credentials.

“Despite the challenges faced by the PBSA sector over the past 12 months, it has proved itself to be remarkably resilient versus other use classes. With the longer-term fundamentals highly compelling, we look forward to bringing forward our significant development pipeline, to meet what we believe will be growing demand from both domestic and overseas students.”
