Housing minister Brandon Lewis has launched a national pilot for large-scale custom-build at a 122-home development in Basingstoke.
ZeroC will develop the site at Park Prewett with custom-build models ranging from self-build to custom fit-out.
It comes after the government pledged £350m in the Spending Review for additional funding for the sector.
Lewis said: “The Park Prewett pilot is a fantastic example of our commitment to double the number of custom-build and self-build homes by 2020, so that anyone who wishes to design their dream house can do so.”
Recognising that access to land and funding are key barriers to self-build schemes, the government has also launched a flexible fund offering £1bn in loan finance to replace the Builder’s Finance Fund and the Custom Build Service Plots fund.
A further measure in the Housing and Planning Bill will require local authorities to allocate suitable plots to prospective custom and self-builders registered in their area.
The custom-build scheme at Park Prewett forms part of a larger 1,250-home development that the HCA is helping to bring forward.
Colin Molton, executive director of the HCA in the South and South West, said: “We’ve made land available for custom-build on pilot schemes across England, and aim to give many more people the opportunity to design their own homes in the future.”
