Alistair Darling will announce plans today for a major expansion of Britain’s rail network.
The transport secretary will set out his plans at the National Rail Conference in London, which will hear how he plans to add more funding to the almost £15bn already earmarked for the network over the next three years to cater for an explosion in demand.
Plans he is expected to unveil include a new North-South high-speed line and lengthened platforms to cater for increased passenger and freight demand in the South East.
