Data centre giant gets green light for Bedford hub

Data centre giant TRE Global UK has won planning permission for a 200,000 sq ft facility at Twinwoods Business Park in Bedford, Bedfordshire.

Construction work on the £150m centre could start this year after plans were approved by Bedford council on Monday.

The company said the data centre would drive forward the regeneration of Twinwoods, helping to establish the site as a hub for modern, high-tech businesses.

It anticipates the facility, which will contain 10 data halls, 700 computing servers and an attached office building, will become operational in late 2010.

TRE programme director Richard Borton said: “This is a great day for the people of Bedford.

“It was our ambition to create a flagship facility at Twinwoods. We are delighted that the council feels the same way and are excited about the next stage of the development.”

Daniel Chapman, managing director of Skelton Group – the owners of the Twinwoods site – added: “These plans are perfect for Twinwoods and Bedford.

“They will create a high-quality development and mark a new chapter for Twinwoods.

“We are confident the new investment and jobs will act as a catalyst, attracting other high-tech businesses.”
