David McLean/Tesco to develop 50-acre Liverpool scheme

North West developer David McLean Group and Tesco have been jointly named as the preferred developer on a major mixed-use scheme at Stonebridge Cross, Liverpool.

Speke Garston Development Company, Liverpool Housing Action Trust and Liverpool Housing Trust are behind the 50-acre (20.2ha) retail, leisure and housing scheme, at a site off the East Lancashire Road in north Liverpool.

The scheme comprises a 100,000 sq ft (9,290 sq m) Tesco Extra superstore, 80,000 sq ft (7,432 sq m) of other shops, around 300 homes, leisure and community facilities.

A masterplan for the scheme is being produced and a planning application is set to be submitted in early 2003.

Stonebridge Cross is in the Approach 580 Strategic Investment Area (SIA), one of eight Merseyside SIAs earmarked for European Union Objective One funding.

Speke Garston Development Company, a joint venture of Liverpool council and the North West Development Agency, is set to become the nucleus of the Liverpool Land Development Company, which will oversee four of the SIAs: Approach 580, Speke Halewood, Eastern Approaches and Atlantic Gateway.

Ainsley Gommon is the lead architect on the residential element, with the Building Design Partnership playing that role on the rest of the scheme.
