The St David’s Partnership, the joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres, has entered into a formal legal agreement with Debenhams to extend the anchor store in the St David’s Shopping Centre, Cardiff.
The extension will create an additional 28,000 sq ft of retail space, forming an anchor at one end of the new 967,500 sq ft St David’s 2 development.
The Debenhams extension will be carried out at first floor level and will open onto the new St David’s 2 main arcade which will seamlessly link the current St David’s Shopping Centre and the new St David’s 2 development.
The enlarged Debenhams store will sit firmly at the heart of the enlarged centre, with the southern end of the main arcade anchored by a John Lewis department store.
Lester Hampson, development director for the St David’s Partnership, said: “It is important to create an integrated city centre.
“The enlarged Debenhams, as a pivotal point in the new centre trading on two mall levels, plays a vital part in achieving this objective and will provide a strong link between the existing and new retail offers.”
Kay Chaldecott, managing director of CSC, added: “Having two large, modern department stores anchoring the scheme provides a strong basis for our pre-letting campaign.
“We are talking to other leading retailers to bring new names to Cardiff and establish it as a top UK and European retail destination.”
