Debenhams seeks five-month rent holiday from landlords

Department store retailer Debenhams is asking for a five-month rent holiday, to mitigate the impact from coronavirus.

The retailer is seeking this alongside an ongoing call for reductions in rents and business rates.

It is executing a CVA process, which involved the closure of at least 22 Debenhams stores in January, and rent cuts on the remaining portfolio. It plans to close another 28 shops early next year.

A spokesman for the retailer said: “All retailers are facing unprecedented pressures from the current situation and we are managing our operations to minimise risks to colleagues and customers while — as far as possible — trading as normal.

“We have access to funding, supportive investors and an experienced leadership team that will take appropriate action to manage through this period.”
