Demolition of Wembley Stadium’s twin towers stirs protest

The twin towers of Wembley could be demolished to make way for a new 8,000-seat National Stadium.

Architect Sir Norman Foster has still to finalise his design. Plans are expected to be confirmed in the next few weeks. Demolition of the towers, which has created an emotional uprising by football greats and lovers of architecture, could begin in less than a year. Work will start after next year’s FA Cup Final and should be complete by 2002.

The original £240m cost has grown to an estimated £350m.
