The Department for Work & Pensions has taken 18,000 sq ft on a 10-year lease at 25 Settles Street in Whitechapel, E1.
The DWP has taken the self-contained space on the lower ground, ground and first floors of the four-storey property at an annual rent of £900,000, or £50 per sq ft.
Bought in 2018 by a private investor, the building has undergone significant refurbishment in recent years. The landlord was represented by City fringe specialist agency Compton and Cushman & Wakefield.
Elliott Stern, co-founder at Compton, said: “The neoclassical office property has been thoughtfully reimagined and redesigned to provide a modern, contemporary working environment.
“The redevelopment recognises the building’s rich heritage with a specification that complements its unique features, such as the crescent-shaped pitched roof, which dates back to the 1930s, and provides a stunning backdrop for a workspace of an exceptional standard.
“Whitechapel itself is one of the most exciting districts of the City fringe. The imminent arrival of the Elizabeth Line will add to the area’s connectivity and this is attracting occupiers who were traditionally in more core locations,” he added.
