Department stores may be given protected status

Brutalist department stores may soon be granted protected status as Historic England announces a review of landmark buildings.

In seven years, more than 50% of department stores across the country have closed.

Historic England said it was responding to “an increase in requests for them to be considered for listing”.

In October a public inquiry is due to start into Marks & Spencer’s plans to bulldoze its former flagship store on Oxford Street.
