Derby council is to appoint a construction partner for its proposed £28m velodrome leisure facility on 11 July.
Speaking at the Derby Embassy breakfast seminar in Birmingham this morning, chief executive Adam Wilkinson confirmed the news.
A partner will be chosen for the project – to be located next to the city’s Pride Park – from the five short listed parties: Bam, Bowmer and Kirkland, Galliford Try, Interserve and Morgan Sindall.
The velodrome, which will house a 5,000- seat concert facility, is part of the council’s £50m leisure strategy. It already has detailed consent.
The site is on contaminated land and needs Environment Agency approval. If this is not given, Wilkinson confirmed that an alternative site would need to be found.
Given EA approval, work is expected to start on site in the autumn, with completion due in mid-summer 2014.
The second part of the council’s leisure strategy is a proposed £22m Olympic-sized swimming pool. Wilkinson confirmed today that plans are moving forward, with the council acquiring a riverside site from Riverlights Developments for £3m. The council hopes to link the swimming pool with the velodrome via the River Derwent. The scheme is being project managed by Mace. A planning application will be submitted by autumn this year.
