Albert Gubay’s Derwent Holdings has been granted planning consent for the 890,000 sq ft retail-led mixed-use redevelopment of Edge Lane Retail Park in Liverpool.
The consent follows a decade of disputes between Derwent and Liverpool city council over the future of the site, which is considered a key gateway into the city centre.
Derwent and planning consultancy DPP submitted a planning application in October for the £200m scheme, which is designed by Manchester-based AEW Architects. The project includes replacing the existing retail and leisure park with 47 retail outlets, four restaurants and three leisure units, plus public realm and 1,795 parking spaces.
Derwent’s wider Edge Lane proposals include regeneration along a half-mile stretch of the road, including industrial space, an expansion of the Rathbone hospital, plus a new park.
Steve Burne, AEW’s managing director, commented: “This is a very significant project for the region at a time of continuing uncertainty and we are looking forward to delivering the first phase as soon as possible”.
John Francis, partner in DPP’s Manchester office, said: “Consultation with key stakeholders has been important, and subject to the confirmation of Government Office, it is hoped that work can begin on the site in early 2011.”
