Derwent Holdings is seeking leave to challenge a high court hearing earlier this month that dismissed its attempt to block a £47m redevelopment of Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester.
Albert Gubay’s Derwent, which owns the nearby White City retail park, had sought a judicial review of the local council’s decision to grant Ask Developments, Tesco and Lancashire County Cricket Club permission to build two new grandstands and a 100,000 sq ft supermarket at the ground.
It claims that the planners’ decision-making was “flawed”. Derwent’s plans for a rival scheme, including a 100,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s, were thrown out at the same planning meeting.
Lancashire County Cricket Club said that the ongoing legal battle was causing a major drain on its finances. Earlier this month the club revealed that it had racked up a legal bill of £1.6m to date and that delays to its £70m project had caused it to lose £2m of grants from the North West Development Agency and £1m from Sport England.
