The National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners say 50 applications from councils have been submitted in the past year to sell allotments, mostly for housing development schemes.
The demand from developers comes at a time when waiting lists for allotments among keen gardeners have never been longer.
Protests have been made about the consortium building Crossrail, in London, which is seeking to acquire two sites in Acton, to the west of the capital, and the sale of a site in Hartlepool for expensive housing.
