Plans for an £8.5m budget hotel in Brixton, South London (pictured right) have been unveiled by the developer’s architect, Michael Johnson Architects.
The six-storey hotel will be built on the site of the 3,150 sq m (33,907 sq ft) former unemployment benefit offices on Coldharbour Lane. The development will be the largest single private sector investment in Brixton since the riots in the 1980s.
Lambeth Council, which has just granted consent for the 200-bed room hotel, welcomes the project.
According to architect Michael Johnson, the developer behind the scheme is Dublin-based Sunshine Properties. He also confirmed an as-yet unnamed hotel operator has been signed up.
The developer will provide the bulk of the funding itself but is investigating possible grant aid from the DOE and English Partnerships.
The backers of the scheme believe Brixton has great potential as a tourist area. In the last few years many new bars and restaurants have opened to complement the traditional Brixton Market. The area is also served by the Underground and numerous buses.
Johnson said the developer hopes to start on site next Spring and open the hotel in 1999.
