Developers come together for 1m sq ft shop scheme in Belfast

Belfast city centre will house one of the largest shopping centres in Europe.

MEPC, John Laing and Dunloe Ewart have unveiled plans for a £400m scheme on the city’s prime retail pitch, Royal Avenue. The development will total over 69,675 sq m (750,000 sq ft).

The Royal Avenue joint venture will see MEPC – in conjunction with John Laing – extend its Castlecourt shopping centre by 37,160 sq m (400,000 sq ft) to create a mega-mall of three-quarters of a million sq ft.

This will be linked to Dunloe Ewart’s proposals to develop 32,515 sq m (350,000 sq ft) retail scheme on a Royal Avenue site the company has assembled over the past five years.

The joint venture partners intend pooling their respective sites and creating one of the largest city centre retail and leisure projects in Europe. Together with the existing Castlecourt centre, the development will create a single centre in excess of 1m sq ft.

The announcement comes only two weeks after it emerged that Dutch developer Multi Development Corporation (MDC) is planning a 52,000 sq m (560,000 sq ft) redevelopment of Victoria Square. MDC’s scheme will include a 25,000 sq m (269,000 sq ft) department store.
