Developers line up for £1bn Bromley revamp

Bromley opprtunity areas

The London Borough of Bromley has unveiled details of a £1bn action plan to regenerate the town centre.

Proposals from developers and investors will next month be sought for the 15-year masterplan. The plan for the Kent town outlines 12 opportunity areas where a total of 1,800 homes, 75,000 sq ft of offices, 450,000 sq ft of shops and 81,000 sq ft of restaurants can be built.

It also includes scope for 350 hotel bedrooms, 43,000 sq ft of leisure space, including a cinema, and 38,000 sq ft of community facilities.

The largest opportunity area is a site to the west of the high street, earmarked for 1,180 homes, 215,000 sq ft of shops and restaurants. A 237,000 sq ft extension to the Glades shopping centre is also proposed on a site called The Pavilion, adjacent to the protected Queens Gardens.

Two opportunities have already been snapped up by developers. In June, The Land Group was selected by Bromley council to take forward plans to refurbish and convert the town hall into a 150-bedroom hotel with conference facilities.

And in October last year Cathedral Group was appointed to progress the £300m redevelopment of Westmoreland Road.

Council leader Stephen Carr said: “Our strategy remains clear and simple: to build a better Bromley, and that is precisely what we are doing.”

The proposals will be officially revealed at an Invest Bromley event on 20 September.

CB Richard Ellis is working as Bromley council’s development adviser.
