More than 50 developers have expressed an interest in taking part in one of the first housing schemes in the Thames Gateway, earmarked by the government as a key area for its ambitious housebuilding programme.
The 7,000 new homes will be built on previously used land in Canning Town, in Newham, east London.
The development will include new housing, shops and studios. Unlike other proposed developments in the Thames Gateway, the area is well served by public transport, including the Jubilee Line, Docklands Light Railway and North London Line. London City Airport is also located in the borough.
The scheme will offer improved housing to existing residents as well as an additional choice of properties and affordable housing.
Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, said: “The redevelopment of Canning Town and Custom House is the most exciting regeneration project within the Thames Gateway. It offers a unique challenge to meet the government’s strategic housing targets while integrating new and existing communities.”
