DfT to dispose of 39 DVLA sites

The Department for Transport is planning to shut 39 offices by the end of 2013.

The government body announced today that it intends to close 39 Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency assets, comprising a mixture of test stations and large offices.

Under the proposals published for consultation by roads minister Mike Penning, three properties in London are affected. Other sites which will be sold or given up when leases expire are located in Brighton, Edinburgh, Exeter and Northampton, among others.

The move is expected to generate year-on-year savings of £28m. The consultation concludes on 6 March 2012.

Collectively, the DfT, Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Department for Health, and the National Health Service, have identified 264 surplus sites with the capacity for nearly 57,000 homes.
