Suited and booted
Dress for the job you want. That’s what they say isn’t it? But what about when you have taken the plunge, set up on your own and already have the career of your dreams?
Well, then there is no better validation that your sartorial choices match your ambition than being papped on the streets of London by a GQ photographer.
Presenting exhibit A – Jacob Loftus, former head of UK investment at Resolution, photographed by the men’s style magazine in a Thom Sweeney ensemble just three months into his new role as founder of creative developer General Projects. Looking sharp.
And here at Estates Gazette we like to back a winner, so check out this week’s feature to see Loftus take his place among our Rising Stars of 2016. Click here to see the full list.
Pull your socks up, proptech
Watch your back UK proptech. The Americans are coming and they mean business, right down to the tips of their toes.
Diary was momentarily distracted last week halfway through an interview with the founder and chief executive of US start-up Hightower – by his socks. Alaskan-born Brandon Weber, who was in London for the company’s UK launch, was sporting the Cloud 100-branded items with pride.
It might be time for the UK to pull its socks up…
Mann anchors Towerathlon
If you’re going to be mistaken for anybody it may as well be a super-funny comedian.
This OMG tweet from Alex Griffin at the cycle sprint for last week’s LandAid Towerathlon shows a rugged competitor in a pinafore with a blonde wig.
The real person in the photo has been identified by LandAid as fundraiser David Mann of Tuffin Ferraby Taylor. Easy to see how he could have been mistaken for Anchorman star Will Ferrell.

BL branding laid bare
Always be careful with your branding. British Land is describing its latest London launch, offices at 7 Clarges Street, W1, as “in keeping with the Mayfair Club style”.
Diary is told by a colleague that the first search result on Google for “Mayfair Club” is a strip club around the corner in Dover Street.
In fairness, British Land’s six-storey building has nothing more racy than bicycle racks and showers.
Blast from the past
While researching a financial story this week, Diary stumbled across something of a collectors’ item for the listed property sector – the 2007 EPRA annual conference brochure.
Pre-crash names featured now no longer with us, or at least not in their current guise, include EuroHypo, IVG and the biggest one of all, Lehman Brothers.
There are also few big names still in the same roles as back then – John Carrafiell was at Morgan Stanley, Francis Salway was heading Land Securities and Ian Marcus was ruling the roost at Credit Suisse.
And where was the conference held? That pillar of financial stability, Athens.
