Discussions progress on proposed £6bn Pennine canal scheme
Cumbria County Council is to discuss a plan to spend £6m on the construction of a canal to link Carlisle with Newcastle upon Tyne Council on October 24. The Western Water Highways scheme would carry ships of up to 15,000 tonnes through the Pennines. Engineer Derek Russell believes it would provide up to 300,000 jobs and reduce traffic pollution. But the North of England Assembly yesterday gave the proposal short shrift after an initial study.
