Disused toilets to be turned into Great Fire of London museum

A disused public toilet is set to be turned into a “micro museum” educating visitors about the Great Fire of London.

The empty toilets next to the Monument on Pudding Lane, EC3, will be overhauled inside to introduce interpretive displays and digital exhibits.

The plans are being worked up by Eastern City BID and the City of London Corporation, starting with a change-of-use application.

The Monument was built in the years after the 1666 fire to commemorate the event and the rebuilding of the City. The applicants say the new project will have “big stories told in a tiny space”.

“This compact but visible space will host interpretive material, displays and digital content relating to the Monument and the history of the Great Fire of London,” they said, adding that the material will be reproduced from the London Archive.
