DIT to set up new trade hubs in Cardiff and Belfast

The Department for International Trade is set to establish new trade and investment hubs in Cardiff and Belfast as well as a second site in Darlington, County Durham.

The DIT will also relaunch its trade hub proposal for Edinburgh.

The four trade hubs will be set up as part of a new strategy to “boost exports and bring the benefits of the government’s global trade policy to the whole of the UK”.

These locations are expected to be staffed with 550 people by 2025, with plans to increase this to 750 by 2030.

The Edinburgh base, which opened last August at Queen Elizabeth House, will see a “significant” increase in headcount following the relaunch.

Teams of export and investment specialists will be based at each location to provide businesses with support and advice on boosting their overseas trade and accessing major markets. Exporters will also have a “direct feed” into UK trade policy.

Liz Truss, international trade secretary, said: “These trade and investment hubs will help this country to an export and jobs-led recovery.

“They will mean we can channel investment into all corners of the country, and that exporters – whether they are selling Scottish beef, Welsh Lamb or cars made in the North of England – have access to the expertise they need to sell into the fastest growing markets.”
