Division over plans for Edinburgh’s Royal High School

Edinburgh council finds itself at the centre of a new planning battle, this time involving the city’s former Royal High School.

Supporters of plans to redevelop the school argue that the addition of two new wings to the building will bring it back to life after a long period when it has been deserted; opponents say converting it to a luxury hotel could destroy its character and are instead backing a proposal to house a music school at the site.

The council recently approved plans to redevelop St James Centre, despite protests about the design.
