DIY and lighting sales brighten up high street

Retail sales slowed slightly this month after a spending boom over the summer but remained strong, adding to signs that consumers are not cutting back.

In its monthly survey of retailers and wholesalers, the CBI said retail sales in the year to September eased from a particularly strong August but remained in line with the long-term average, driven by higher sales of household goods.

Official figures from the Office for National Statistics showed sales of these items rising last month, driven by demand for furniture and lighting.
