The DOE has called in Morrison Developments’ plans for a 19,276sq m (207,500sq ft) leisure scheme fronting the A34 bypass at Handforth, Cheshire.
Macclesfield Council had resolved to approve the application which includes a multiplex cinema, three themed restaurants, a family entertainment centre, a night club and 24,154sq m (26,000sq ft) of non-food retail. Most of this, according to letting agent Dunlop Heywood’s Stuart Burdon-Bailey, is under offer.
But the DOE wants to examine the possible effects of the development on the vitality and viability of Wilmslow, Stockport and Altrincham town centres. It is also wants to check whether any alternative sites for such a development exist within or next to nearby town centres.
However DH’s Richard Moffatt says the scheme has been specifically designed to satisfy PPG6. It is easily accessible on foot and by public transport, and is unlikely to have any adverse effects on other existing amenities. In addition it would be next to the new Tesco, Marks & Spencers and Allders.
