Dominus gets thumbs up for 1,000-bed Manchester student tower

Dominus Real Estate and Whitbread have secured planning consent from Manchester City Council for a 1,000-bed student accommodation-led development in the city centre, which will also include around 387,500 sq ft of office space.

The One Medlock Street scheme includes two new buildings, with 13 and 37 storeys. It replaces an existing Premier Inn hotel and is expected to support 475 jobs.

The offices aspect will offer capacity for 2,200 office jobs. Once completed, the scheme is expected to contribute £1.6m in business rates each year.

Features will also include a landscaped pocket park, rain garden, public art and “green streets”. The scheme is designed by Jon Matthews Architects.

Dominus Real Estate principal director Jay Ahluwalia said: “Our aim is to provide a huge boost to Manchester’s Southern Gateway, contributing to the continued regeneration of the First Street area.

“Our One Medlock Street scheme will bring high-quality and flexible grade-A offices, much-needed student housing at a location supported by the City Council and a better street-level experience for all.”
