Dominvs ditches 23-storey hotel as lender caution grows

London developer Dominvs has dropped plans to develop a 23-storey hotel in Hammersmith, W6, amid lender troubles in development finance.

Dominvs will now seek to replace the 442-bedroom building with a 20-storey student scheme, retaining some 400 hotel rooms in smaller buildings to the south of the site.

The developer received detailed consent for the 842-bedroom scheme at the site of the former Hammersmith Magistrates Court, on Talgarth Road in 2020, following outline plans a year earlier.

However, in the wake of the pandemic lenders have backed from funding new hotels.

The shift to student follows Queensgate’s decision last week to pull plans for the £1bn Kensington Forum Hotel development. The scheme proposed 749 beds, alongside 340 serviced apartments and affordable housing, and was due to be debated by inspectors this May following sign-off from the Greater London Authority.

A spokesman said: “While the tourism industry has been impacted by the pandemic over the last 12 months, we recognised the continuing resilience of the student accommodation sector.”
