Don’t water down net zero, begs leading climate scientist

A leading climate scientist has called on the UK government not to abandon its climate goals.

The interim chair of the Climate Change Committee, Piers Forster, wrote in The FT that “net zero is not a slogan or a nice-to-have but a necessity”.

But it will require investment, and “businesses tell us that investment requires consistency: long-term policies and firm deadlines”, he said.

“This is precisely the wrong time to lose the UK’s informed political consensus on tackling climate change,” he added, in a criticism of the government’s attempts to water down its stance for political gain.
