Downing secures UK Border Agency for Liverpool HQ

Capital, Liverpool

Downing has secured what it is terming Liverpool ’s largest commercial letting, after agreeing a 15-year lease with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) at The Capital.

The 220,000 sq ft deal will see UKBA, one of the city’s biggest employers, consolidate 2,000 staff from its six Liverpool offices into one base at the Old Hall Street building.

The move will begin towards the end of 2009 and is expected to be completed in early 2012.

Downing has been working on plans for a £15m refurbishment of The Capital since acquiring the building from Royal & Sun Alliance in 2006.

Downing chariman George Downing said: “This letting is a clear endorsement of the quality of our building, its location and the enduring appeal of Liverpool as a place to work and live.

The Capital is Liverpool’s largest commercial building, comprising a net internal area of 390,000 sq ft. Downing will bring further accommodation within the building to the market in late 2009/early 2010.
