Birmingham-based developer DPM has submitted an outline planning application for a major food store on land at the Burton Rugby Club, in Burton, Staffordshire.
The planning application is for a 100,000 sq ft food store with 500 car parking spaces and was submitted on behalf of land owners Burton Rugby Club, HPN – owner of the adjacent Blockbuster video site – and Peelcroft Burton.
Burton Rugby Club is selling the land for development after recently winning consent to build new rugby club facilities at Branston Bridge.
Paul Tolley, director of DPM, said: “It is accepted that there is a need for a new food superstore in Burton. The rugby club is in the town centre, and is allocated for retail uses in the town centre masterplan. It is in an ideal location being adjacent to the Octagon shopping mall and close to the town centre car parks.”
Subject to consent, the new store could open in 2013.
A public consultation on the proposed scheme will be held in the near future.
