DTZ appointed to plot Stockport regeneration

Stockport council has appointed DTZ to put together a development brief for a regeneration project in the Greater Manchester town.

DTZ will draw up a brief for the Grand Central leisure complex, with a view to attracting a private sector development partner for the site.

The brief will outline the council’s aspirations for the site, including grade A office space, car parking and hotel.

Earlier this year, the council bought the 76,000 sq ft Grand Central complex, next to the town’s main railway station, from the administrators of a Targetfollow company for £15m.

Stockport’s Town Centre Development Prospectus identifies four distinct areas which offer regeneration opportunities, including an office-led business quarter around the railway station and A6 corridor.

Paul Lawrence, service director for regeneration at Stockport council, said: “This appointment reinforces our commitment to driving forward the regeneration of this important town centre site. It is the next step in signing up a development partner to help us attract a further £100m investment and create 700 jobs for the borough.”

Ken Bishop, senior director at DTZ, said “The regeneration of Grand Central will continue the renaissance of Stockport as a commercial location, and build upon the good work already started with the completion of BAM’s St Peter’s Square scheme and GMPVF’s proposals for the former sorting office recently acquired from the Royal Mail Group.”
