Dublin council plans to redevelop St Michael’s Estate site

Dublin City Council plans to redevelop the former St Michael’s Estate in Dublin into a €125m (£109m) mixed-use scheme, including 578 homes. The proposal is part of the council’s affordable housing initiative and will include a mix of studio flats, and one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. Dublin City Council’s 10-acre masterplan for the site on Emmet Road also includes a supermarket, library, children’s play area, 6,100 sq ft of retail space and 3,100 sq ft of restaurant/cafe space. The development spans buildings of between three and seven storeys. The site was historically part of the Richmond Barracks, a British Army Barracks first occupied in 1814. The site was later redeveloped as residential accommodation, with the social housing-centred St Michael’s Estate completed in the 1970s. The buildings were in use up until the early 2000s, with the demolition of the various blocks undertaken between 2004 and 2013. The site is currently home to a mixture of brownfield areas with remaining buildings permitted for demolition, other than the Inchicore Community Sports Centre, a two-storey structure constructed in the early 2000s which will remain in place.
