Duke’s land invaded by Roam

Hundreds of protesters trespassed on the Duke of Somerset’s property yesterday to demand more access to private land.

Campaign group Right to Roam marked the beginning of a nationwide campaign by walking across Berry Pomeroy Castle woodlands near Totnes, part of the 2,800 acres in Devon and 3,400 in Wiltshire owned by the duke.

The group argues that the freedom to roam in the 2000 Countryside and Rights of Way Act is insufficient, with only 8% of English land being accessible to walkers.
