The Kingdom of the Netherlands is reconsidering its move to Ballymore’s Embassy Gardens in Nine Elms, SW8.
Under an agreement announced in 2013, it was to take a 50,000 sq ft office within the 15-acre Embassy Gardens scheme, which wraps around the new US embassy.
The Dutch bought the freehold to the site within the development for £19.3m in January 2013.
However, detailed plans for the office on Plot A07, as it is referred to within the outline planning documentation, have still not been submitted.
A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The ministry is still considering a number of options in this regard.”
The current Dutch embassy, at 38 Hyde Park Gate, SW7, was put on the market in May 2014, after the move to Embassy Gardens was announced.
Offers of more than £150m were expected from luxury residential developers, with initial plans for around 18 super-prime flats.
However, a sale was never agreed, and the Dutch confirmed later that year it was delaying the sale. A similar story emerged regarding the sale of the French embassy, put up for sale in 2015.
The indecision will be a blow to the creation of a new embassy quarter south of the river, which at one time was thought to have attracted moves from both the Chinese and French embassies, and boosted the regeneration of the Nine Elms area.
If the site is not developed it will leave a triangle of land between the US Embassy and the surrounding residential development.
Ballymore was unavailable for comment.
