Dwell plans Brum student project

Dwell (Birmingham) has submitted plans for a major student accommodation scheme in central Birmingham.

The Solihull-based firm’s proposals include a tp bennett architects-designed scheme, comprising 520 bedrooms, on the site of the former Globe Works on Cliveland Street.

The site is located in a historic and industrial part of the city, 10 minutes north of the prime Colmore Row office pitch.

The building’s design will be sympathetic to its historic surroundings and is designed as a four-section building facing Cliveland Street and with a corner element on New Town Row. The design has also incorporated the canal at the rear of the site and two large landscaped courtyards with areas of open space that extend down to the water.

The scheme will comprise studios, two-bedroom apartments, and range of cluster apartments.

Nenad Manasijevic, principal director at tp bennett, said: “We wanted our design to reflect the history of the local area and the aspirations of the next generation who expect an aesthetic and 21st century living and work environment. We’ve taken inspiration from the area’s strong industrial heritage and have used brick to ensure the development blends in with the existing architecture.”

A decision on the planning application is expected in the new year.

tp bennett is both architect and planning consultant on the scheme.
