Earl loses right to castle life tenure

The High Court has ruled that the Ninth Earl of Macclesfield is not entitled to live in Shirburn castle, Oxfordshire, for he rest of his life.

It said, however, he should have at least two years’ notice, along with his Fentville game-dressing business, which operates from the Old Stores, one of the outbuildings.

The High Court case resulted from disputes between different branches of the Earl’s family which has owned the property since 1716 through Beechwood Estates.
